In Tines’ solo recording debut, the musician grapples with the legacy of a hero. Exploding the musical repertoire of Paul Robeson, Tines and his band THE TRUTH — pianist John Bitoy and sound artist Khari Lucas — take listeners on a trip from the stage of Carnegie Hall to the floor of a Moscow hotel room in an attempt to understand an icon not through aspiring to his monumentality, but through connecting to his vulnerability.
The season opens with an evening of soulful masterworks rife with musical and emotional turmoil. The ever-shifting textures and styles of Nielsen’s single-movement clarinet concerto are paired Brahms’s Third Symphony, which exudes the composer’s characteristic angst as it alternates between major and minor. The moody prelude to Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde rounds out the program.
Jasmin Solfaghari is known throughout Europe as an author, teacher, dramatic coach and most well-known as an opera director. She has directed Rigoletto, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Tannhäuser, Der Ring Des Nibelungen, and has reached critical acclaim by her recent and ongoing production of Parsifal in Dornach, Switzerland at the Goetheanum. In this lecture she will discuss directing Parsifal with its important nuances and the complexities of doing so in a non-traditional opera house.
