Community School Online Learning

The Community School of Performing Arts believes it’s important to allow our students to continue their education even if they can’t be on campus. We have developed a plan to implement and manage online/remote teaching for both private lessons and group classes.

Summer Registration

Registration begins on April 27. While we look forward to being together again on campus, we continue to provide high quality arts education to the best of our abilities online. We will adjust our program online the following ways:

Private lesson packages will be discounted in 8, 12, and 24 lesson increments for study taking place mid May–August. These discounts will appear after you add the lessons to your cart and proceed to checkout:

  • Students who sign up for 8 lessons receive 1.5 lessons free
  • Students who sign up for 12 lessons receive 2.0 lessons free, plus music theory intensive at 50% off
  • Students who sign up for 24 lessons receive 3.5 lessons free, plus music theory intensive for free
  • Students can still register for less than 8 lessons at the regular individual lesson price

All group classes have been discounted 10%; this discount is already built into the tuition pricing. Three-month payment plans can be set up for the months of May–July, with no additional set-up fee. Students currently receiving need-based financial aid or those who have submitted financial aid applications and meet the minimum qualification requirements, may be given up to 25% off their private lesson registration.

Students can register online or register by email.

Private Lessons

Online/remote instruction for Private Lessons will resume by April 2. You will be contacted by your individual lesson instructor to arrange a time that’s convenient for you. Faculty will have the resources to work with the best platform that works for you.

With private lessons resuming on April 2, there will no longer be a spring break for Community School students. Major religious holidays, such as Easter and federal holidays, will be observed but the school will no longer have any significant breaks until all Spring lessons are fulfilled.

Group Classes

As of March 26: Group classes will resume on April 9 with the exception of Suzuki groups. Suzuki Guitar will begin on April 5 and Suzuki Violin and Cello will begin on April 8. All group classes will be held on the Zoom platform.

Your group class will continue on the same day and time as it was occurring previously.

As of April 3: Each group class will be assigned to one of our Community School staff who will send you weekly updates. You will receive a Zoom link for all of your sessions for the remainder of the term.

There is no longer a spring break for Community School students. Major holidays such as Easter and Memorial Day will be followed but the school will no longer have any significant breaks until all Spring classes are fulfilled.

Large Ensembles and Chamber Ensembles

As of April 3: Large ensembles include orchestras, bands, jazz big bands, and choral groups. Due to the unforeseen health concerns throughout the country, we don’t anticipate returning to regular on-site instruction until summer at the earliest. We hope you will rejoin us as soon as the school reopens for instruction but we understand that, in some cases, your circumstances may have changed.

Colburn will be providing refunds/credits for large ensembles and chamber ensembles in the following manner:

  • Seniors/graduating students will receive a refund for the number of sessions that were cancelled due to the closure of Colburn’s campus.
  • Colburn Community Chorale participants will receive a refund for the number of sessions that were cancelled due to the closure of the school.

Financial Aid and Merit Scholarships

Financial aid, Merit, and Herbert Zipper Scholarship applications for the 2020–21 academic year will be accepted via regular mail or email. The deadline has been extended to May 15.

2020–21 Ensemble Auditions

Auditions for bands, orchestras, string ensembles, and chamber institute will move to an online video submission process. No audition appointment is necessary.

Large Ensembles: Audition information may be found on the Ensembles page.

Chamber Ensembles: ALL students who wish to participate in CHMI next season (Honors and Scholarship groups included) will need to audition. Auditions must be submitted by June 14.
The online application and audition information can be found on the Ed and Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute page.

Thank you, once again, for your understanding and support. We wish you all the best and hope that you stay safe during the coming months as we look forward to seeing you back on campus soon!

The Community School office will be checking emails regularly. Please reach out with any questions via email at cspa@colburnschool.edu.

Susan Cook

Q:  Are online lessons supposed to replace in-person lessons?
A: Due to the current climate in California, schools have turned to online/remote instruction for the remainder of the school year, and we are doing the same for the Community School. We believe it’s important to allow our students to continue their education even if they can’t be on campus and have developed a plan to implement and manage online/remote teaching for both private lessons and group classes. We will begin with private lessons and more information will be forthcoming for group instruction and ensembles.

Q: Payment Status
A: The Colburn School is not currently processing refunds. Your tuition allows us to keep our commitment to all staff and faculty that we will continue to pay their salaries. We believe you will find the experience beneficial not only for your child’s artistic growth, but also their emotional and mental well-being. Schools and organizations nationwide are offering online teaching as a way for students to continue to connect with their instructors and bring a bit of normalcy back into their lives, during a not so normal time. We appreciate your continued support and understanding during this unforeseen time.

Q: How are group classes taking place and when?
A: We are in the process of training our faculty and ensuring they have the appropriate tools necessary to conduct group class online. Each group class has been individually assessed to determine what methods will be used in lieu of an in-person meeting.

Group classes will resume on April 9 with the exception of Suzuki groups. Suzuki Guitar will begin on April 5 and Suzuki Violin and Cello will begin on April 8. All group classes will be held on the Zoom platform. Your group class will continue on the same day and time as it was occurring previously.
