Concert Band and Wind Ensemble

Concert Band

The Concert Band is an ensemble designed for middle and high school wind and percussion students who demonstrate playing ability at the intermediate level. No previous band experience is required. This ensemble emphasizes music reading and ensemble skills.

Duration
Rehearsals: Thursdays, 6:30–8 pm and Saturdays, 2–3:30 pm
Sectionals: Saturdays, 3:45–4:45 pm
 

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble is intended for high school intermediate through advanced level wind and percussion students. Repertoire includes original and arranged works for winds. This ensemble emphasizes music reading and ensemble skills, as well.

Duration
Rehearsals: Mondays, 6–9 pm

Minimum Age Requirements

Concert Band: 6th grade (some age exceptions made)
Wind Ensemble: 9th grade (some age exceptions made)
 

Audition Requirements

Concert Band

Be prepared to demonstrate:

  • Five two-octave scales. Scales should be memorized and played in concert F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, and D-flat major, plus a two-octave chromatic scale.
  • Audition excerpts. Prepare the passages on excerpts 1 and 2 within the brackets observing all articulations, dynamics, and tempo markings. You will be evaluated on the accuracy of your performance based on intonation, rhythm, dynamics, tone quality, and style.
  • Solo piece. Perform a prepared solo piece that represents your technical skills and musicianship. Do not bring an accompanist.
  • Sight-reading. The music will be presented at the audition.

  • Audition excerpts. Prepare the passages on excerpts 1 and 2 within the brackets observing all articulations, dynamics, and tempo markings. You will be evaluated on the accuracy of your performance based on intonation, rhythm, dynamics, tone quality, and style.
