M.A. degree in composition from California State University, Los Angeles; Served as Opera Workshop coach at Cal State, L.A.; Founded his own Contemporary Opera Theatre Workshop.

In addition to teaching at the Colburn School, Lisa Gillespie is an adjunct professor of dance at Loyola Marymount University and a frequent instructor at the Santa Clarita Ballet Academy.

John holds a masters degree in collaborative piano from the University of California, Irvine, where he was a fellowship student of Nina Scolnik.
