Private lessons are available for students of all ages and levels of achievement, from young children to adults. A placement audition is required for all piano instruction. Students should prepare two pieces, along with a major and a minor scale for the placement audition. Auditions are generally held on the first weekend of September, the last weekend of January, and the first week of June. Appointments may also be arranged throughout the year. Beginning pianists accepted into the program will enter a two year transitional period with a teacher, in order to prepare for audition and entry into the Colburn School's piano department.
The Colburn School offers traditional piano instruction using classical music as its basis. For information about Jazz Piano study, please go to the Jazz website page.
Private Piano Instruction
The Colburn School offers individual piano instruction that provides students with the skills required to learn an increasingly more difficult and demanding repertoire. Private piano instruction is available in increments of 30, 45 or 60 minutes, as determined by the instructor.
Students enrolled in piano study of any kind must have access to an acoustic piano (with a minimum of 66 keys) for daily practice. In general, a minimum of 60 minutes of practice per day is required.
Prospective students who wish to study privately at the school must submit an online inquiry form, after which, they will be contacted by the department chair for an audition. Placement requires an audition and is dependent on teacher availability and studio space; enrollment is not guaranteed due to limits on the number of students we can accommodate.

Emphasis on Performance
Performance is an integral aspect of the piano program at all levels. Studio classes, monthly departmental workshops and school-wide recitals are some of the ongoing performance opportunities available to students. In addition, advanced piano students are encouraged to participate in the Ed & Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute and in the Certificate Program. Progress reports are given annually to assess the accomplishments and progress of all students.
