Program Information

This year's program will feature two collage performances in Zipper Hall. Participating ensembles include the Colburn Youth Orchestra and Colburn Concert Choir, as well as students from the CSPA jazz, chamber music and dance programs.

We are pleased to introduce the inaugural recipient of the CSPA Distinguished Alumni Award, jazz pianist Donald Vega.

Classically-trained in his native Nicaragua, Donald Vega immigrated to the United States at age 14, where he attended Crenshaw High School and the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. Vega began learning the language of jazz from mentor Billy Higgins at The World Stage and later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. He was fortunate to find a home at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts where he studied classical piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo and Dr. Louise Lepley, jazz piano with Jeffrey Lavner, theory with Clay Jenkins, and jazz ensembles with both Clay Jenkins and Lee Secard. Vega went on to graduate from the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great, Kenny Barron. Vega currently performs internationally as the pianist for world renowned bassist Ron Carter's Golden Striker Trio.

Vega's debut album, Tomorrows, was released in 2008 to rave reviews. In his sophomore album, Spiritual Nature, he is joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash, where he explores the marriage of jazz, latin and classical music. Spiritual Nature was released on the Resonance Records label August 2012. It stayed at the top of the jazz charts for several weeks, reaching all the way to #1. Vega goes into the studio this spring to record his third album, a tribute to Monty Alexander. Mr. Vega will be sharing the stage with our CSPA jazz students for a special performance at Zipper Hall.
