Application Materials

The admissions process, supplemental materials, and entrance standards are the same for the BM, PD, MM, AD, and PSC. All materials, including the Conservatory application, DecisionDesk prescreening video, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and TOEFL scores are due to the Conservatory Office of Admissions by the December 1st deadline. Applicants missing required materials by the deadline may not be prescreened for a live audition. The Admissions Committee will not consider an applicant for admission with an incomplete file. You can find a checklist here to help you make sure you complete all parts of the application.

Enrollment in the Colburn Conservatory of Music is based on the instrumentation of a symphony orchestra plus a piano department. The Conservatory of Music accepts applications only for instrumental areas in which there are openings. Students interested in enrolling must apply by following the process and requirements described here.

Please see the Audition Repertoire tab on the left for audition requirements. If you have any questions, contact us at admissions@colburnschool.edu or 213-621-4534.

Official Transcripts

All applicants must submit official transcripts from previous schools.

  • Freshman (BM) and PD applicants must submit a high school transcript.
  • Undergraduate (BM) transfer applicants must submit both high school AND college transcripts.
  • Post-baccalaureate applicants (those applying to the AD, PSC and MM programs) must submit transcripts from all colleges attended.
  • Documents that are not originally in English must be submitted in the original language and with a certified translation. If you received a degree from an international institution, you may be required to have your degrees verified by an agency in the United States. The applicant is responsible for verification fees.
  • Electronic transcripts are accepted as long as they are official and sent directly from the school. All transcripts sent via mail must be submitted in envelopes sealed by the issuing school.

Letters of Recommendation

Letter of Recommendation links will be sent to the teachers whose email addresses you provide through DecisionDesk. However, if your recommender prefers to send a letter via email, mail, or fax, that is acceptable as well. The mailing and contact information can be found on the recommendation form or on the website below. You are responsible for sending the form to them if they do not want to use the link provided by DecisionDesk. Please remind your recommenders that recommendations are due December 1.

BM and MM applicants must submit two letters of recommendation:

  1. A recommendation describing the applicant's instrumental development and abilities from the applicant's current applied (private) teacher, excluding relatives: Recommendation Form Number 1
  2. A recommendation from another musician (such as a chamber music coach, orchestra director, summer festival teacher, etc.) describing the applicant's musical abilities and ability to be successful in an academic degree program: Recommendation Form Number 2

PD, AD and PSC applicants must submit two letters of recommendation:

  1. A recommendation describing the applicant's instrumental development and abilities from the applicant's current applied (private) teacher, excluding relatives: Recommendation Form Number 1
  2. A recommendation from another musician (such as a chamber music coach, orchestra director, summer festival teacher, etc.) describing the applicant's musical abilities: Recommendation Form Number 2

Resume

A resume must be submitted onto your DecisionDesk application. A resume is defined as a list of your academic and musical accomplishments. Please do not submit a program bio. Because many applicants confuse a program bio with a resume, we have created a sample resume. If needed, please use the sample resume as a guide.

Essay

A short essay must be uploaded onto your DecisionDesk application. The essay question is provided on the DecisionDesk application. This essay must be a minimum of two paragraphs in length, and should not exceed 1 page, single spaced.

Statement of Purpose

A Statement of Purpose must be uploaded onto your DecisionDesk application. Prospective students are required to submit a brief Statement describing your objectives in enrolling at the Colburn School. This statement must be a minimum of two paragraphs in length, and a maximum of four paragraphs in length, single-spaced. This is not a general essay, but must specifically address why you wish to enroll in the Colburn School.

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores (SAT and ACT) are helpful but are not required. Usually these scores are included in high school transcripts.

TOEFL Score

An official TOEFL score is required if your native language is not English. The Colburn School's TOEFL code is 8477. TOEFL scores are due December 1. For more information, see the section on International Student Admission).

Prescreening Video Recording

Applicants must upload a pre-screening recording in video format through the DecisionDesk program as a part of our application. Audio only recordings are not accepted. We do not accept DVDs or CDs.
