The Colburn Orchestra features rising stars from the Conservatory of Music with celebrated conductors. This season, five student soloists perform concertos with the orchestra.
Student soloists take the stage with the Colburn Orchestra throughout the 2017-18 season. The orchestra is made up of rising stars on the cusp of performing careers, with celebrated conductors from around the world and Music Director Yehuda Gilad.
Cellist Youna Choi, an Artist Diploma candidate, opens the season at Ambassador Auditorium on September 23 performing Walton’s Cello Concerto with guest conductor Courtney Lewis. An experienced performer, Youna has frequently been featured in Carnegie Hall, and the Ewon Cultural Center and Urim Arts Hall in her native South Korea.
The season continues with Bachelor of Music violinist Aubree Oliverson performing Dvořák’s Violin Concerto on October 21. Aubree has appeared multiple times with the Utah Symphony, and has performed on prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. She has been featured on NPR’s From The Top four times, and was a 2016 YoungArts National Finalist and a 2016 US Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
Artist Diploma pianist HyeJin Kim performs Rachmaninoff’s lush, but notoriously difficult Piano Concerto No. 3 at Valley Performing Arts Center on December 10. HyeJin made her major label debut in 2013 with her Sony Classical recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. She made her Carnegie Hall recital debut performing a program of Scarlatti, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Barber, and Gershwin in 2016.
On February 3, violinist Hao Zhou performs Dutilleux’s violin concerto L’abre des songes, or “The Tree of Dreams” with guest conductor Thierry Fischer. A Bachelor of Music Candidate, Hao has received awards in numerous competitions, including the American String Teachers Association State Solo Competition, the Music Center Spotlight Competition, the Torrance Concerto Competition, the Edith Knox Performance Competition, and the Downey Young Artists Concerto Competition.
The orchestra season closes on March 3 with Professional Studies Certificate candidate Joachim Becerra Thomsen, who, at 21, was appointed principal flute of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He came to Los Angeles in 2016, having performed extensively throughout Denmark with orchestras and chamber ensembles. His most recent position was Principal Flute in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra
The Colburn Chamber Music Society at Zipper Hall also features students and their teachers alongside world-renowned guest artists. This offers students, who are themselves on verge of launching professional careers, a valuable opportunity to collaborate with famed performers. This season, visitors include pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Lynn Harrell, alumni group the Calidore String Quartet, violinist Anthony Marwood, and more.
