Lessons are full-year registrations (32 weeks). Special incentives will be available prior to the first day of classes—details will be forthcoming. The school will continue to monitor when it will be safe and viable to return to campus for instruction in person. Until it is safe to return to campus, all private lessons will be taught remotely. In addition, students registered in 32-week lesson packages are able to receive a 50% discount for theory classes for Elementary Music Theory IB, Dalcroze III, and levels above.
For those students who have already graduated from the Community School and will be taking a gap year and delay their college start this fall, the Community School will be offering a gap year package where students who enroll in the full 32 weeks of lessons can take a theory class for free. For more information, please inquire with our office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The school will be offering some exciting new classes remotely this fall, including Music Production, Music Appreciation for Adults, and Jazz Theory. Students registered in a Jazz Workshop class will be able to receive a 50% discount for Jazz Theory.
The Community School will not be offering Choral Ensembles, Bands, or Orchestras for the 2020–21 academic year.
We recommend students and parents regularly review our academic calendars for updates and changes. The Colburn School only observes holidays noted on our calendar. We do not follow the Los Angeles Unified School District calendar or that of other districts.
2020–21 Fall Schedule of Classes
2020–21 Spring Schedule of Classes
Private lessons for music students is the chance to receive intensive training and focus on specific skill development. To request private lessons, students must submit an inquiry form. Note: Inquiry forms should only be submitted if you’re interested in private lessons or wish to audition for an ensemble. Approximately two weeks after submitting the form, you’ll be notified by the appropriate Colburn Community School of Performing Arts representative regarding an interview and/or audition.
When meeting with department members, you may be asked to play a music piece as well as answer questions. Our faculty wishes to gauge your level of interest and learning style, as well as assess which days and times lessons can be scheduled. Due to faculty and studio availability along with high demand for private lessons, there’s no guarantee all requests will be granted. If a faculty member requests a lesson with the student to determine placement, a new student will be charged for one lesson through the Community School office.
Costs for private lessons, based on 32 weekly lessons in the academic year from August to May:
For new students beginning private study after August, tuition may be pro-rated according to the number of weeks left in the academic year. Tuition for private lessons is updated each academic year, and is listed in the Schedule of Classes. Need-based financial aid and merit-based scholarships are available at the beginning of the academic year. Learn more about the requirements to qualify for financial assistance.
Collaboration is an essential element to any music educational program, so we’ve created numerous opportunities for students to showcase their talents and advancing skills.
Auditions for the 2020–21 academic year are canceled until further notice for the following programs: Large String Ensembles and Orchestras, Bands, and Vocal Ensembles. Visit specific ensemble and orchestra pages for more details.
