Dedicated to emigre, composer, and long-time Los Angeles resident Walter Arlen, this program features premieres of works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Walter Arlen, who both fled fascism and artistic repression in Europe and made their home in Los Angeles. A pre-concert talk at 5:30 pm will focus on the life-defining challenges exiled artists faced in the 1930s and 40s and what must be done today to keep their work alive. Violinist Shunske Sato leads a baroque-focus master class with Colburn students, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic, creative, and learning processes. Sato will also perform a short recital. Violinist Shunske Sato is equally at home as a soloist or an ensemble leader, whether on the baroque or modern violin. Historically informed practice of all eras inspires Shunske; the parameters of the past are essential for him in bringing the music into the present. He is particularly involved in cutting-edge research of 19th century performance practices, and gives lectures and workshops on the topic.
The Baroque Ensemble presents Bach's famous Brandenburg Concertos in their entirety. Bach's kaleidoscopic scoring allows Colburn's talented students to shine in multiple solo roles, and the intimate space of Thayer Hall will facilitate a performance of these beloved works with their original, leaner instrumental forces.
