Student Accomplishments, December 2018

Xuesha Hu, an Artist Diploma pianist, won first prize at the American Liszt Society International Piano Competition.

Master of Music violinist Felicity James was appointed to the Associate Concertmaster position of the Minnesota Orchestra.

Xuesha Hu, an Artist Diploma pianist, won first prize at the American Liszt Society International Piano Competition. She will be invited to play concerts in Budapest, London, and Washington, DC next year.

Community School student Anthony Gonzalez will make his debut as a lead actor in his first live action film, Icebox. Originally scripted as a short film, it was picked up at the Toronto Film Festival and acquired by HBO as a feature film set to debut on the network on December 7.

Josh Rogan, a 2017 Artist Diploma recipient, was appointed Sub-Principal Trumpet of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Community School alumna Geneva Lewis was a finalist in the 2018 International Naumburg Violin Competition.

2014 Professional Studies Certificate recipient Dana Jackson joined the Seattle Symphony as the 3rd Bassoon/Contrabassoon. She was also appointed Adjunct Instructor of Bassoon at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

Kris Bowers, an alumnus from the Community School’s jazz program, composed the score for the movie Green Book. He also transcribed and played pianist Don Shirley’s recordings from the 1960s, and worked with lead actor Mahershala Ali.

Bachelor of Music harpist Alyssa Katahara performed the Ginastera Concerto with the Pasadena Repertory Orchestra on November 9th.

Timothy Michling, a 2009 Artist Diploma recipient, was appointed Principal Oboe of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. He also joined the faculty of the Oakland University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Community School violinist Sofia Miranda will perform on NBC’s Little Big Shots on December 12.

2009 Bachelor of Music alumnus Patrick Staples joined the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in the bass section.

Violinist Julia Pautz, who graduated with her Professional Studies Certificate in 2007, joined the San Diego Symphony.

60 Youth Dance students will be performing in The Music Center’s production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker with Miami City Ballet from November 29–December 2.
