Student Accomplishments, May 2019

Ruriko Terada, a Conservatory harpist, has been appointed Artistic Programs Associate of new music organization MUSE/IQUE.

Benjamin Manis (BM ‘16) received one of ten Career Assistance Awards from The Solti Foundation U.S., which presents young American conductors with monetary grants. Ben was recently appointed Resident Conductor of the Houston Grand Opera beginning September 2019.

Music Academy clarinetist Yejin Ahn and Community School jazz bassist Dario Bizio both won the Grand Prize in the Music Center’s Spotlight Awards and will perform at Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 4.

Mei Hotta, a Community School cellist, won first place in the Bellflower Concerto Competition.

Community School jazz violinist Gianna Pedregon has been accepted as one of seven members of the 2019 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival Women in Jazz group. The group will appear at the Jazz Education Network conference in January, at the Next Generation Festival in April, and at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September 2019.

Sarah Kienle (BM ’11) will join the Dallas Symphony Orchestra viola section beginning September 2019.

This year’s graduating class of 15 Music Academy students will continue their music studies at the Colburn Conservatory, Curtis Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, Lynn Conservatory of Music, New England Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory, and USC Thornton School of Music.

Conservatory tuba player Andy Abel won the tuba position in the New World Symphony and will start in the fall as a Fellow.

Community School pianist Michael Groner was a finalist in the 2019 Redlands Bowl Young Artists Concerto Competition and will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra on July 2.

Community School pianist Sophia Glicklich performed in 2019 Elite International Music Competition Winners Recital at Carnegie Hall in New York. She was also a medal winner for the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, Orange County West.

Community School violist Andy Park won first place in the Mondavi Center Young Arts Competition in Davis, CA.

Robert Shlyakhtenko, a Community School pianist, won District 8 of the California Association of Music Teachers (CAPMT) Honors Audition, advanced to the state level, and was awarded third place. He was also a medal winner for the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, Orange County West.

Community School pianist Vivienne Hong-Harutyunyan was a winner at Branch Bach Festival.

Community School cellist Amy Jong and violists Allison Park and Hanah Park all received first place in the preliminary round of the CalASTA 2019 Bowed String Competition.
