The Viano Quartet performs at Wigmore Hall in London
Congratulations to Conservatory quartet members Lucy Wang, Hao Zhou, Aiden Kane, and Tate Zawadiuk in the Viano String Quartet, who received third prize in this year’s Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. The youngest quartet competing, they also won the Haydn Prize for the best performance of a Haydn quartet in the preliminary round, and the Sidney Griller Award for the best performance of Thomas Adès’s The Four Quarters. The awards come with cash prizes of £3,000, £1,000, and £1,000. For the final round, the Viano Quartet performed Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 14 in A-flat Major, Op. 105 at Wigmore Hall in London, UK.
This accomplishment adds to the quartet’s growing collection of competition prizes, including the bronze in last year’s Ninth Osaka International Chamber Competition & Festa.

The Viano String Quartet was formed in 2015 and is coached by Martin Beaver. They have also been coached by faculty Clive Greensmith, Paul Coletti, Fabio Bidini, and Arnold Steinhardt, and artists such as David Finckel, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, members of the Emerson String Quartet, and the Calidore String Quartet. The quartet also participated in the Bellingham Festival of Music’s Play It Forward residency in March 2017.

The Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition is held every three years, and focuses on Classical, Romantic, and contemporary repertoire. Widely recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious quartet competitions, the competition offers the winning ensembles outstanding opportunities for career development. This year, 12 quartets were chosen to advance to the preliminary stages of the competition in London. First prize went to the Esmé Quartet based in Germany, and second prize went to the Goldmund Quartett from Germany.
